Off to Newlands for the cricket? We’ve got your seating guide here

Objectively speaking, Cape Town’s Newlands is the most beautiful cricket ground on Earth. Half-sporting paradise, half-essential tourist pilgrimage, the famous old stadium has captured imaginations worldwide…

In fact, it’s the only cricket ground in the world where you’ll need to bring both a warm jacket and a barrel of sun cream. It gets hot here, but the Cape winds absolutely lash Newlands from time to time.

With India and Australia both visiting over the summer, we’ve got a seating guide to help you pick the best spot.

Seating and Spectator information for Newlands:

What is the capacity of Newlands?
The Ground can hold 25,000 spectators at full capacity

Who else plays there?
As well as the Proteas, domestic sides Western Province and Cape Cobras play their home fixtures on this ground.

Best view of Table Mountain at Newlands?
That would be from the North Stand, as well as ‘The Oaks’ – it’s an open grass area to the right of the main gates (East side of the ground, furthest away from the train line).

Usually during a Test match, you’re likely to have the wonderful smell of frying boerewors and onions penetrating your nostrils from the locals. Get to the grass as early as you can for an International game, it’s prime real estate.

How do I buy tickets?
For all four and five day events, it’s highly likely you can buy tickets on the day. However, this changes given the opposition. Tests against England and Australia are almost always all-ticket affairs. Any international one-day games are also high demand.

You can buy online using Ticket Pros for both international and domestic games. You can also buy tickets at the ground by visiting the Railway Ticket Office at the Wynberg end, or visit A-Gate and B-Gate either side of the scoreboard on Oaks Grass Embankment

Where are the shaded seating areas at Newlands?
The President’s Pavilion / South West Stand is generally regarded as the best refuge from the sun, where it stays shaded from noon onwards. The Railway stand also offers shade and a cracking side on view of the quicks.

Where are the grass banks?
We’ve already spoke a little bit about both, but the Oaks Embankment is underneath the scoreboard and to the left of the North Stand, whereas North West Grass – the favourite spot of England’s raucous Barmy Army – is to the right of the North Stand.

Is Newlands wheelchair-friendly?
Absolutely, wheelchair access is provided at every stand and there a number of designated disabled parking bays. There are plenty of disabled toilets all around the stadium, as well as elevators provided for upper tier access
