Rugby News: Joel Stransky tips the Boks to triumph over England

Springbok legend, Joel Stransky believes South Africa have it in them to to defeat England, when the two sides clash over three Tests in June this year.

The series against the Poms begins a week after the Boks take on Wales in a historic once-off Test against Wales in Washington DC, in what will be new coach, Rassie Erasmus’ first game in charge after a horrid 2017 under Allister Coetzee.

Speaking to the Mirror, the World Cup-winning former flyhalf said home ground advantage, as well as their opponents’ injury woes will tip the scales in the hosts’ favour.

“South Africa will feel that home ground advantage is big,” Stransky said.

“The fact it’s the end of the northern hemisphere season and England players will be tired is another consideration – as are their injuries.”

England, ranked second in the world, will be without several key players, including captain Dylan Hartley – a handicap Stransky believes should give the home side tons of confidence, despite being ranked relatively low at sixth.

“England-South Africa is not a fixture you can just pitch up to expecting to win,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter from what low base the Boks come, there is a lot of pride and history behind them. And at home they don’t capitulate. I take South Africa to win the series 2-1.”

England won the last meeting between the two sides, running off 37-21 victors when they clashed at Twickenham in the 2016 November internationals.

This broke a long winless streak in encounters with the Boks, having last tasted victory ten years prior, with the men in green winning 10 of the 11 matches played in that period – a 14-14 draw in Port Elizabeth the only blemish in their record.

The first Test in the three-match series takes place at Ellis Park on Saturday, 9 June and is followed by clashes in Bloemfontein and Cape Town on the 16th and 23 June respectively.
