Rugby News: Newlands could be hosting its last Test on Saturday

One of SA’s oldest Test venues could say ‘goodbye’ to international rugby. Newlands’ last taste of Test rugby could unfortunately not be a high-stakes grand affair with everything on the line.

As reported by Afrikaans newspaper, Rapport, next Saturday’s dead rubber between the Springboks and England is set to be Newlands’ last international for the foreseeable future.

According to the publication, the cash-strapped Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) is set to place the historic ground on the market and move to the state-of-the-art Cape Town Stadium in Greenpoint.

The union along with the City of Cape Town are said to holding negotiations to facilitate the move, which are now in the final stages.

Why is the WPRFU moving from Newlands?

Following a multi-million rand lawsuit brought by publishing agency, Aerios against the union in 2016, it was on the brink of bankruptcy and was rescued from liquidation by the Johan Rupert-owned investment company, Remgro with a loan of over R44 million.

Now, according to the Huffington Post, WPRFU have until 6 July to make arrangements to pay back the loan, following a letter of demand from the Stellenbosch-based company.

This has reportedly left the union with very little choice but to sell the stadium, with the newer, multi-purpose venue the most likely alternative.

However, WPRFU president, Thelo Wakefield has assured the union’s club in a letter that all is well.

“WP Rugby can confirm that former WP Rugby (Pty) Ltd shareholder Remgro has not recalled its loans and that WP Rugby is in regular contact with Remgro with regards to its outstanding indebtedness to Remgro. WP Rugby strongly denies that it is facing bankruptcy and that its creditors are closing in.”

With the Stormers left with one home fixture in the current Super Rugby campaign, this would mean Newlands is left with just two games of professional rugby should the ground be taken off the WPRFU’s hands.
