South African tourism industry just received another blow after a group of 9 foreign tourists became the latest victims of violent crime after robbers struck a rental house in the Silonque Nature Reserve, north of Phalaborwa, in Limpopo.
Three robbers, two of whom were armed with firearms, held nine foreigners captive during a house robbery, according to a police statement. An underage girl is believed to have been raped by the villains during the incident after they took her to a separate room during the ordeal.
The robbers got away in a stolen Mercedes-Benz with cash, cell phones, laptops and jewellery. The abandoned car was later found 10 km down the road in the bushes.
According to Network 24, the girl and her mother apparently went to Johannesburg the next day from where they left the country.
Brig. National Police spokesman Vish Naidoo says no rape charges have been brought forward in connection with the incident, which is why he won’t comment on the allegations.
Sources say the girl was taken to a Phalaborwa hospital.
“The girl’s mother was only concerned about the pills (PEP) which, after exposure to HIV / Aids, reduced the chance of the virus catching on. There was also no female doctor on duty, and she did not want her daughter examined by a man. They just wanted to leave, ”says the source.
The girl and her mother went to Johannesburg the next day from where they left the country.
Willem Botha, of the AfriForum neighborhood watch in Phalaborwa, says the neighborhood watch suspects it was the same group of robbers who also struck in the area on Saturday.
His own home is one of three habitats in the nature reserve that went through. Robbers kicked open three front doors and broke into Botha’s home.
They got away with a kettle and decoder, among other things.
Police did not respond to inquiries about the latest robbery in the nature reserve.
