Springbok Rugby News: Boks to play Wales without overseas-based players

Springbok coach, Rassie Erasmus will have to go into his first Test at the helm with a XV comprising of only players based in South Africa.

Erasmus’ men open the 2018 season with a historic once-off Test against Wales, played in Washington DC on 2 June – a date which happens to fall just outside World Rugby’s international window – meaning European clubs risk a fine if they release their players for national duty in this period.

Welsh coach, Warren Gatland has also been dealt a similar blow, as he was forced to leave out his England-based contingent, as he named a squad devoid of the likes of experienced Bath lock, Luke Chateris, and Wocester Warriors wing, Josh Adams.

His South African counterpart, Erasmus has previously indicated an interest in bulking up his squad with a few players plying their trade outside these shores, with Sales Sharks scrumhalf, Faf de Klerk reported to be firmly in his sights, along with a few more Bok exiles like the injured Pat Lambie, who now plays for Racing 92 in France.

The former Bok flank has also been backed by his employers, SA Rugby, who recently relaxed the restrictive selection policy, which would have only allowed him to call up the more experienced overseas-based Boks, as a 30-Test threshold was set during his predecessor, Allister Coetzee’s tumultuous tenure in charge.

Erasmus will however have a bigger pool of players to choose from when England arrive for a much-anticipated three-match series starting on 9 June.
