A man paid R1,500 to bring his own laptop back into South Africa: SARS outlines strict customs rules

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has issued a new statement on what items you have to declare when leaving and returning to South Africa.

The statement follows a BusinessDay article in which a South African businessman reported that he was forced to pay R1,500 to bring his own laptop back into the country.

“In terms of customs legislation, South African residents travelling abroad are not required to declare their personal effects when leaving the country, nor upon return,” it said.

While South Africa remains an under-performer‚ Japan is the best passport to have and the Emirati are capitalising on tourism to diversify their economies‚ according to an index of global travel access. President Cyril Ramaphosa is targeting travel within Africa to improve SA’s future scenario.

Since reaching its highest rank of 35th globally in both the 2008 and 2009 Henley Passport Index listings‚ South Africa has dropped 15 places‚ now occupying 50th place overall‚ offering 102 destinations with visa-free access.

SA plans to ease visa admin for holders of valid US, UK or Canadian visas

When it comes to making it easier for key markets to visit South Africa as well as concluding key travel business deals, the “proof is in the doing”, says Minister of Tourism Derek Hanekom.

Speaking to Traveller24 over the weekend after Indaba 2018 took place in Durban, Hanekom says he remains positive about tourism’s potential.

“Indaba was really excellent, having spent four days there and meeting with eight African ministers and one deputy, it was packed with a good turnout.”
