‘Zimbabwe not ready for credible elections’

Zimbabwe are not yet ready for a free, fair or credible election, said a delegation of observers from the USA, Europe and Africa on Friday.

The pre-election assessment group, which consists of the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), told reporters that they hope that the issues that they disclosed in their report to the Zimbabwean Electoral Commission (ZEC) will be resolved successfully.

Zimbabweans outside the country will not be allowed to vote on 30 July – How many will return for this historical event?

On 30 May 2018, the Zimbabwe Constitutional Court in Shumba and others v Minister of Justice and Parliamentary Affairs & others ruled that Zimbabweans outside the country could not participate in elections and in particular in the harmonised elections scheduled to take place on 30 July 2018, if they did not return to the country to register and vote. This finding directly violates a 2013 decision of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights that the prohibition on the right of Zimbabweans living abroad to vote constitutes a clear violation of the African Charter.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa: Zimbabwe will not return land to white farmers

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Saturday said the country will not return land seized from former white commercial farmers almost two decades ago.

“It will never happen,” Mnangagwa said in a speech to his ZANU-PF party supporters in central Zimbabwe, broadcast on television.
